The ballot closes today (November 18th) for tickets to attend next year's Battle of the Somme Centenary commemorations at Thiepval.

Applicants must be residents of the UK or Ireland. Details of how to enter online can be found via the Somme 2016 website.

Eight thousand free tickets are available for the event at the Thiepval Memorial on July 1st 2016.

Jointly hosted by Britain and France, the ceremonies will mark the 100th anniversary of the start of the First World War Allied offensive in Picardy in 1916.

They'll be televised in neighbouring French towns and throughout the UK.

There will also be events running until November 18th 2016 to mark the 141 days of the Battle of the Somme.
