The Flemish Government is to invest €20m on restoring monuments and creating new exhibitions, ahead of an influx in visitors to Belgium for the WW1 Centenary.

Announcing the investment plans during a trip to Britain, the Flemish Tourism Minister, Geert Bourgeois, insisted that the move was not a cynical ploy to make money out of war but to invest in "peace tourism".  The area around Ypres expects a sharp increase in visitors for the Centenary between 2014-2018, with British visitors expected to be the largest contingent of tourists.
